Report on the CALSU Activity in 2009

CALSU was organized at Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the NAS of Ukraine at the initiative of its Director, Academician M.H.Zhulynsky, and at patronage of the US Embassy for Ukraine in October, 2005. The Center's Regulations, Statute was approved, the Research Council, representatives in regions were appointed, the International Consultative Council was formed.
The Center unites more than thirty active participants from Kyiv and different regions of Ukraine. Among them, there are six professors, PhD (USA), twenty Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors, postgraduate students, teachers of higher education institutions, among which eleven are Fulbright program alumni.

1. Pursuant to the Plan, the annual CALSU conference was held in January, 2009, at which the report on activity of the Center in 2008 was discussed and approved; the action plan for 2009 was discussed and approved; polling of participants the Center's research activity was conducted.
Each of the speakers emphasized uniqueness of the Center's activity, as it consolidates research potential of Ukrainian American studies, constantly extending its geographic coverage, contributing into its representation in the global community of researchers in American studies, and, at the same time, offers research information and a certain impetus for development of the entire Ukrainian philology, where the Center enjoys deserved respect.
As a positive aspect, high research activity of the Center's participants was emphasized: research presentations and participation in discussions at international and Ukrainian conferences (professor N.Vysotska (Kyiv), professor T.Potnitseva (Dnipropetrovsk), professor N.Zhluktenko (Kyiv), Doctor of Philology T.Myhed (Kyiv), associate professors O.Gon (Kyiv), M.Shymchyshyn (Ternopil), M.Koval (Lviv), S.Yakovenko (Kyiv), L.Kazakova (Bila Tserkva), Candidates of 'Philology O.Dubinina, G.Stembkovska, G.Pokydko, Yu.Rybalko (Kyiv), N.Krynytska (Poltava), graduate student Yu.Tkachuk (Kyiv-the USA), lecturers O.Babich (Kyiv), O.Bezhan (Odesa), et al.). Publishing activity of the center's researchers was emphasized as being extraordinarily productive – the total number of publications in the Ukrainian and foreign press makes up more than 40.

2. In January, presentation of the 3rd, commemorated to Prof.Denysova's anniversary, and 4th volumes of CALSU year-book "Discourse of Romanticism in the US Literature" took place. Positive impressions about the Center's activity were voiced by the corresponding member of the NASU D.S.Nalyvayko, corresponding member of the NASU, deputy Director of the Institute of Literature NASU M.M.Sulyma, corresponding member of the NASU T.I.Gundorova, professor of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy B.Shalaginov, associate professor of Lviv University O.Bandrovska, teacher of foreign literature O.G.Sokolova et al.
Attention of participants was also turned to the fact that the research products of the Center, considering the limited number of their copies, are targetedly distributed among the proper libraries, chairs and specialists.
Active participation of the Center in Fulbright programs and operation of Kyiv branch of Kennan Institute was mentioned as being fruitful and creatively productive.
The interesting presentation by G.Stembkovska on the mutual connections of high and mass US literature in J.Demiray Resource Center and the master class by O.Gon on issues of Ukrainian-English translation were regarded as a positive initiative.
The participants especially emphasized the operative and full information published on the web site of the Center, expressed their sincere gratitude to the US Embassy for Ukraine for financial support of the Center's research activity, to management of Shevchenko Institute of Literature NASU for active support of our initiatives, to the coordination team (O.Gon, G.Stembkovska, O.Dubinina, Yu.Tkachuk) for irreproachable devotion to the undertaking.

3. On February, 27 2009, the all-Ukraine Scholar Symposium "AMERICAN MODERNISM: CONTEXT, PERSONALITIES – POSTOSTMEDERD PERSPECTIVE" was held, during which approximately 20 presentations by Ukrainian researchers were heard and discussed.

4. Based on the seminar's proceedings, the fifth volume of CALSU year-book was prepared but not published yet because of unavailability of financial resources.

5. Systematic work of the School of American Literature was continued. During the first half of 2009, monthly sessions focused on comprehension of the key trends of American criticism and literary studies of the 20th century were conducted:

In the second half of the year (September-December), because of the lack of financial resources, we adopted a different framework: we conduct sessions once in two months. In the center of our attention – discussion of creative elaborations by participants of the School, the majority of which are today postgraduate students of Ukrainian universities, Candidates of Philology, Doctorate students (Kyiv National Shevchenko University, Shevchenko Institute of Literature, Kyiv Linguistic University, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Mykolaiv P.Mohyla University, Ternopil, Odase, Chernigiv, Gorlivka, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv Universities), with Doctors' and Professors' systematic participation in the sessions.
In October, discussion of the topic of high and mass culture in the context of globalization took place – the lecture by Prof.N.Vysotska, who was a participant of the seminar on this theme in Salzburg.
In December, the lecture by M.Shymchyshyn (Ternopil) on the complex and contradictory nature of the phenomenon of Harlem Renaissance.
In total, eight sessions took place on the base of Fulbright Foundation.
